Provide millennials with a tool that helps them contribute to caring for the environment

December 2023

statement of the problem

Countless young adults yearn to diminish their environmental impact, improve their consumer behaviors, and economize. There's a prevalent ignorance around this topic, a dearth of learning time, and a sloth to implement what's known. Our aim is for, at a minimum, 15% of this demographic to be inspired to devote time to education and adopt the simplest practices, thereby decreasing their environmental impact and providing a contribution to the planet.

Ensure that millennials can learn and feel motivated to take care of the environment

It is vitally important to guarantee a sustainable future for the generations to come. Currently, according to the research carried out, millennials have a more significant interest in caring for the environment and a greater intention to learn about this topic.

There is an awareness that they want. Extend to your closest circle and feel that they are contributing. For millennials, the mobile phone is a very important element in carrying out different activities.

I learned that these people lack time to dedicate to learning, and there are many activities that generate reluctance or apathy but they also have an intention to change.

My role in the project

I worked as a UX/UI designer, this has been a project that only I have worked on, I did it in order to acquire knowledge and experience, I had the support of a software developer who guided me regarding the feasibility of the solution. I was able to carry out the process from start to finish, from research work to prototyping and testing.

START POINT

“Encourage change in the habits of people in order to make them more aware environmental”

From this I carried out an analysis of the competition, I researched the topic, soaking up the problem, and then I proposed some hypotheses:

  • “Heads of the household can become highly influenced by social pressure to have responsible habits”

  • “The heads of the household relate responsible consumption as something expensive”

  • “Even if they have not acquired green habits, people have the intention of improving”

  • “Reuse of day more frequently in older adults”

  • “People forget their green initiatives due to laziness, lack of time, lack of space”

Based on these hypotheses, I outlined the objectives of the research, and by carrying out the surveys and interviews I was able to deny and affirm some of the hypotheses raised and by carrying out the surveys and interviews I was able to deny and affirm some of the hypotheses raised, building the following archetype:

Marcela Hernandez

30 years old

Dentist

Bogotá Colombia

Married

Personality

Bio

Marcela lives with her husband and two children west of Bogotá. She is middle class, works as a dentist in an EPS and handles rotating shifts.
She loves spending time with her children and tries to teach them to care for the environment but she wants to learn more and contribute as she hopes for a better future for her children.
He has learned about caring for the environment by watching videos on social networks and once received a talk at the children's school.
He is not very clear about the concept of responsible consumption, he relates it to savings. He has put waste separation into practice although he does not always do it, he tries to save water and energy, however he has done it to save costs, sometimes he buys biodegradable products and occasionally he goes to work by bicycle.

Taking into account the needs of "Marcela", the exercise of points of view is rooted with the following result:

"A mother needs to learn more about how to take care of the planet because she wants to change her habits to contribute to the environment."

“A mother needs to know how to be a responsible consumer because she wants to be an example, guide and counselor for her children on this topic”

“A busy woman wants to overcome laziness and be able to put green habits into practice because she wants to feel like she is contributing to the conservation of the environment”

When preparing the brief and according to the progress of the process, I chose to work on a solution focused mainly on millennials. I understood that at this moment in their lives there are many who have children and are more sensitive to being environmentally aware since they long for a good future for their children. They are people who, for the most part, are carrying out some type of work activity and have an independent life, which makes them constant consumers. They are people who showed interest in learning and changing their habits, but with drawbacks such as laziness, lack of time and ignorance of the subject, so by taking this information into account, the following brief is created.

"Hundreds of millennials want to reduce their ecological footprint, have better consumer habits and save money. People lack knowledge of the subject, lack of time to learn and are lazy to put into practice what they know. We want at least 15% of them to have a motivation to dedicate time to learning and put into practice the simplest habits, thus reducing their ecological footprint and contributing to the environment"

Several ideas emerged that were tested, underwent a SWOT analysis and were subsequently reviewed using the feasibility matrices, validating how desirable, feasible and viable each idea could be.

THE IDEA

"Propose challenges to Marcela that are accompanied by information and awareness, so she can learn and develop them daily, weekly, or monthly according to her comfort, we will give her the opportunity to share her achievements with other people"

Starting from this idea, I created the journeymap and created the script that allowed me to visualize the experience that Marcela would have and thus develop the user flow

The user is greeted with an onboarding that briefly explains what Eco Awareness is about, and which allows the user in several aspects, inviting them to immerse themselves in the experience.

Upon entering, the user, in addition to their name, provides the department of Colombia in which they are located, this in order to be able to provide them with tips adjusted to their geographic location that allow them to meet the proposed challenges.

The challenge can be saved

The user can schedule the challenge

The challenge can be marked as finished

According to the research carried out, it was proposed on the home page that the user visualize the categories into which the challenges to be carried out are divided. By clicking on the category, the user will get a list of challenges, which they can filter. Each challenge has its respective video, which makes it easier to understand the information. Initially, the user is made aware and then a task is proposed to be performed. At the bottom a series of short tips are presented according to the challenge, this will allow the user to have context and ideas to help them carry out the task.

Each challenge allows the user to earn a series of points that gives them access to the ranking where they will compete with the other participants, this will motivate them to participate.

The ranking can be viewed by the user in the following way

By carrying out the testing, the topics to be improved in the proposal are evident. Thanks to this, a modification is made to the icons that accompany each challenge and the action corresponding to each one is shown in a clearer way.
